The Floating World Box Set © Naomi Weissman
The fish depicted in this series are koi, a highly-prized Japanese fresh-water fish displayed in koi ponds around the world.
I am interested in exploring the movement of the fish, the play of light, color and form. The koi are almost always in motion and as they swim the fish and the water take on highly abstract, painterly patterns. Because the koi move quickly, there is an element of randomness in the photographs. By the time I snap the shutter, the image is no longer exactly the same one I saw in the viewfinder. The fish and water morph from known objects to abstract forms in somewhat unpredictable and intriguing ways.
The photographs were taken in Hawaii and California.
